Sunrise or Sunset? Venice, CA.

I sit here willing myself to come up with something profound for the new year. Surely there must be some poignant metaphor just waiting for me to twist into the-old-is-gone-the-new-has-begun brilliance. But the thing is, I don’t really feel that new. I kind of just feel like… me. My page pushes back on my pen in the same way it did last year (or is it my mind pushing back on my discipline? And yes, I write with pen and paper first). I sit at the same flea market wooden table that has one leg half painted blue for no discernible reason. And, I still can not think of a metaphor that will immediately ignite a swell of creativity, productivity, “newness”-ivity to the masses.

Alas, I can’t shake that old Robert Burns poem (you know it. The one in When Harry Met Sally). “May auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind.” Well, that’s kind of sad, isn’t it?

Maybe that’s my metaphor. Maybe the auld acquaintances are the bad habits I’ve cultivated in a year of rough around all the edges. The insecurity and the cynicism that at times can feel like the nostalgic, folk song melody of my life.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

I hope we can all find time to take a cup o’kindness this year. Kindness for ourselves and for our old time’s sake bad habits of yesteryear.

And, I’m going to start using “my jo” as my only term of endearment.
